Biology

Are you fascinated by the living world around you?

Do you wonder why you get a fever when you are sick? How come some people can drink milk and some cannot? How can we gene modify cells to produce insulin? Do you want to explore how cells, organisms, and ecosystems function? Studying Biology in the European School system offers you the chance to dive into these mysteries, preparing you to gain knowledge about science, health, and environment.

Teaching

In S5, you will get a solid foundation in genetics, evolution, ecology and cellular biology, learning the core concepts about all living things. At the end of the year of S5 we will go on a 2-day field trip, where we will look at and compare different ecosystems.

In S6 and S7, you can choose biology as A- level (4 periods pr week). In A- level biology we dive deeper into the complex world of biology. The class is a mixture of theory and practical experimental work, to get a closer understanding between theory and reality. Being close to the ZOO, we use the opportunity of working with real animals, but we use every opportunity we have to go on field trips.

In S6 and S7 A – level you will study the units of:

  • Nervous system – how it coordinates and control actions and interaction in vertebrates. The brain as the location of learning and memory and consciousness
  • Cells as the fundamental organizing unit of organism.
  • Biochemistry and the crucial roles of enzymes.
  • The human immune system. Diseases as a phenomenon of populations, and understanding the complexity of epigenetic, seen both from and ethical and biological perspective.
  • Evolution understanding the action of natural selection and the construction of evolutionary phylogenies.
  • Chromosomal genetics and the laws of Mendel.
  • Analyzing ecosystem and understanding the flow of matters and how human have affected this.

Exam

In S5 you have an oral exam, based on a project you have been working on in class. The summer test is a written test with a mixture of multiple choice, analyzing data and explaining biological processes.

In S6 you have an oral exam, based on a project you have been working with in class. The rest of the test and baccalaureate test is a written test consisting of three parts.

The European Baccalaureate qualification in Biology is recognized across Europe, preparing you for university programs in fields like:

  • Medicine and Health Sciences
  • Environmental Science & Conservation
  • Biotechnology & Genetics
  • Marine Biology & Ecology
